1954, Mercedes 300 SL, a sporty, sexy car.

Originally designed for major competitions, it was quickly converted into a road car. The Mercedes 300 SL comes close to the ideal: a level of performance from a modern sports car combined with stylish and sexy lines.

The most efficient of its generation

The Mercedes 300 SL is a highly sought-after model among collectors. Its price can range from one million to 3.5 million euros. It was the highest-performing car of the 1950s, with its striking design and distinctive gull-wing doors that open upwards from the bottom. Its engine featured direct injection, a first for a production vehicle.

A very light automobile

After a period of absence from the podium in the early 1950s, Mercedes sought to create a model that would rekindle the excitement of front-row racing. Its engineers designed a very lightweight two-seater. The car would weigh only 1,300 kilograms and would be called the SL (Sport Leicht) (Sport Light). To facilitate access, the car would feature gull-wing doors hinged on the roof.

Puissant moteur

The 300 SL is equipped with a powerful 2996 cc 6-cylinder engine. This engine was also used in the 300 Adenauer limousine. This engine can reach 250 km/h.

Specific technical aspects

The Mercedes 300 SL boasted technical features unmatched by any other car of its era: a tubular chassis, fuel injection, disc brakes, and gullwing doors. This model was replaced by the 230 SL roadster in 1963. Eighty percent of production was sold in the United States, as predicted by its importer, Max Hoffman. The extremely limited production run of this sporty and sexy car (3,258 units) makes it one of the most expensive collector cars in the world.
