BMW 1500, a model released in 1961, is high-performing and convincing.

Saved from bankruptcy by the strategic maneuvers of millionaire Herbert, BMW managed to overcome the crisis thanks to serious research into innovative models. Following the 1800, the BMW 1500 appeared, well-designed and stylish. This small car marked the beginning of a glorious era.

BMW—these three letters evoke perfection, technological genius, and a unique expertise in high-class automobiles.

Having narrowly avoided being absorbed by the Daimler-Benz group in the 1950s, the company was saved from bankruptcy by millionaire Herbert Quandt, a major BMW shareholder, who bought up as many shares as possible to block the seizure and sale.

He continued to believe in the company despite some models selling poorly. Until then, BMW had no model that could compete with Opel, Ford, and Mercedes.

THE REASON FOR HUBERT

Hubert was right to believe in his company and hope for better days. A pretty little car was born and presented in 1959; it was called the BMW 700. Powered by a motorcycle engine, the car was well received. BMW’s design office was planning a promising modern sedan.

PRACTICAL AND STURDY

It was the BMW 1500, presented in 1961 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Despite its conventional appearance, the car unveiled innovations compared to its similar competitors. Weighing 1043 kg, the car featured four-wheel independent suspension, a feature still uncommon among manufacturers today. The monocoque body was elegantly styled by the Italian designer Michelotti. Its 1499 cc, naturally aspirated, four-cylinder gasoline engine could reach a top speed of 150 km/h at 5700 rpm.

BMW 1500 WELL RECEIVED

BMW’s aim was spot on; the new car garnered the highest praise and most favorable reviews.

Its comfortable interior was well-designed and refined by the Italian stylist. Its handling was excellent, thanks to its suspension.

Following the success of the 1500, other, more powerful models would follow, such as the BMW 1800 in 1963 and the 2000 Ti with 131 horsepower.

BMW then abandoned its older models to make way for a new generation of successful cars and a new era of glory for the Bavarian firm.
