On the verge of bankruptcy, Aston Martin produced a masterpiece orchestrated by its boss: the Aston DB4. With its powerful engine, seductive aesthetics, and refined interior, this car, designed for city driving rather than racing, was a resounding success.

In the post-war era, Aston Martin was a company in perpetual deficit. In October 1958, David Brown unveiled a masterpiece from this British craftsmanship firm.

Agent 007 and the beautiful Aston Martin

From now on, its name will be linked to secret agent 007, James Bond. The Aston Martin DB4 is an aesthetic triumph of the 1960s. The producer of the James Bond series was captivated by this sublime car. It was his partner in the film “Goldfinger“. Laden with gadgets—machine guns in the front bumper, a bulletproof screen at the rear, rotating license plates, and radar—this automobile charmed everyone. Wealthy Europeans welcomed the DB4 and its sister car, the DB5. The Aston Martin DB4 stands out for its successful design, a class imbued with sportiness. The Aston DB4 remains the finest creation of the era of David Brown, the team’s owner, who was knighted by Queen Elizabeth.

Engine and mechanics

Beneath the Aston Martin’s long hood lies a new 3,670 cc 6-cylinder engine. Engineer Tadek Marek designed the entire engine in aluminum. It features a 7-bearing crankshaft and a double overhead camshaft cylinder head, both chain-driven. This powerful engine can reach speeds of 225 to 240 km/h.

Unlike the DB2, the Aston Martin DB4 inherited nothing from its racing siblings. The objective was a grand tourer, with an emphasis on comfort, such as the synchronized gearbox and the refined interior. 2,244 DB4s were produced in separate series, difficult to distinguish due to the customizations offered on request.
