Equivalent to the Citroën 2CV in France, the Fiat 500, a tiny car, met the need for a mass-market vehicle. Its launch coincided with the creation of the European Union.

Lightweight, simple, and responsive, the car sold well, especially in Italy. A need, a car.

The French got their people’s car (the 2CV) in 1949. The Italians waited eight years to see their dream of owning a people’s car come true. The Fiat 500, the popular, small city car, was officially produced in 1957, coinciding with the Common Market, which represented a new impetus for the entire European continent.

A motorcycle engine

During this period, Fiat greatly benefited from two major sources of support: Mussolini’s public works programs and then the Marshall Plan. Fiat’s automotive business was not thriving. Since 1945, the group had only released the 1400 sedan in 1950 and the 600 in 1955. The Fiat 500 would be powered by a 500cc two-cylinder engine, hence its name. Size and weight were kept to a minimum. Space was freed up, and Dante Giacosa, under the direction of Vittorio Valletta, managed to create a well-designed interior and a reasonably sized trunk. Giacosa designed a canvas roof, giving it a touch of whimsy. With a more powerful engine than the 2CV, the Fiat 500 would go on to sell 3.6 million units.

Comfortable benefits

Until the 1960s, Fiat sold the 500 well and generated comfortable profits because the Italian market was well protected at that time. With the opening of borders, foreign competition caused the small Fiat to decline. Since then, Fiat has been considered a specialist in affordable cars. After the 500, Fiat created another affordable car: the Fiat 126. To this day, Fiat continues to market affordable models.
